Plymouth & District Badminton League

Press Release 4th February 2003

Devonshire Deflate YMCA Kitto C

After winning at Callington, the YMCA had an unchanged team for the trip to
the Devonshire.

Paul Carter and Steve Rowe lost the first game 15-13, and failed to get a
point in the second game.

Paul and Darren Bowden looked to be steering the away side to victory by
taking their first game 15-6.  Unfortunately Paul picked up a injury and
the Devonshire men seized the opportunity and went on to win 15-9 and
then 17-14 in the third game.

Steve and Darren failed to make any real impact in their match and ended up being beaten 15-9 15-7.

The Devonshire ladies proved to be very strong opposition and the YMCA
ladies found aces very hard to come by.  None of the matches went to three games and so heading into the mixed doubles, the YMCA were hoping to avoid a whitewash.

Steve and Patricia Haley could find no answer in their match and lost game 1 and game 5.

Darren and Angie Regan tried hard but were beaten game 8 and game 11.

The team had not suffered a 9-0 defeat all season and it was with great
determination that Elizabeth Nicholson and Paul Carter won the first game
15-11.  Elizabeth played exceptionally well in the second game seizing any
lose shots from the opposition and with confidence and composure the pairing went on to win 15-4.

The YMCA team now have only one league match left to play which will be the return match against the Devonshire in March.  They will be hoping to have Jayne back from injury for this one.

Final score:  Devonshire 'D'  8,  YMCA Kitto 'C'  1
