Press Release 13th February 2003
BATs A team cooked up the recipe for success when they played Salisbury/Armada recently in Division 3 of the Plymouth and District Badminton league. With just three matches left every point was important to maintain their pressure on South Hams who currently top the division.
In the mens doubles rubbers David Harrington and Alan Berry had to work hard in the first rubber to eventually take it 1512 1315 1715. The rallies in the rubber were long and hard and it was difficult to close them out. The second mens double saw David Harrington and Paul Bitton lose the first game 1115 but then come back in the second game to win it 1512 and take the rubber into a third game. The third game was again long but in the end it was the Salisbury/Armada pair who won out by taking the game and the rubber 1512. The third mens double rubber saw Alan Berry and Paul Bitton play well but lose out 915 515.
The first of the ladies doubles rubber saw Susie Povey and Frances Ward cook up the recipe for success early on when they won the long early exchanges. In the end they took the rubber 157 1510 with sweet success. The second ladies doubles rubber saw Susie Povey and Lizzie Rae smell the sweet smell of sweet success with a winning concoction of long rally play 154 1512. The third ladies doubles rubber saw Frances Ward and Lizzie Rae soon dominate the play but with long and drawn out rallies it was a time before their superiority showed through. In the end they took the rubber comfortably 1510 159.
With just the mixed doubles to go the BATs team were confident of winning the match but wanted to take as many points as possible. The first mixed doubles rubber saw David Harrington and Susie Povey play long and drawn out rallies in trying to wear down the opposition and take the points. Susie was even more determined to win after collecting another recipe towards her increasing collection. In the end they took the rubber 157 1510 but the rubber took a long time to complete. The second mixed doubles rubber saw Alan Berry and Frances Ward take time to settle into their game but once they had they took both games comfortably 157 1510. The final mixed doubles rubber saw Paul Bitton and Lzzie Rae start well together and take the first game 1511 but then lose the second game when the Salisbury/Armada pair changed their tactics 715. The third and final game started close but again the Salisbury/Armada took the initiative and take it and the rubber 515.
At the end of the evening it was the BATs A team who came away having cooked up a good victory 63 against Salisbury/Armada to maintain their second place in division 3 of the Plymouth and District Badminton League.
