Press Release 29th November 2002
The much awaited return match in Division 5 saw a cracking evening of badminton at the YMCA.
The YMCA 'B' team started off very strongly with the ladies winning all 3 matches and only dropping 17 aces in the process. The 'C' team were able to give a league debut to 13 year old Elizabeth Nicholson who played exceptionally well.
The men's matches proved to be a real competitive affair. Rob Loader and Pete Shaddock held their nerve to win the first game against Paul Carter and Steve Rowe 15-14. But the 'C' team men came back to win the second game 17-15. Rob and Pete took the third game 15-9.
It was a similar story in the second men's match with Rob and Andy Jacobs winning the first game. This time Darren Bowden and Paul Carter with a 'never say die' attitude came bck to win the second game 15-13. In the deciding game it was very close but Rob and Andy got the better of their 'C' team colleagues and won 15-13.
Pete and Andy then went on to take the third men's match 15-10 15-12 against Steve and Darren.
Two and a half hours had passed before the mixed matches got under way and the 'B' team won the first two matches comfortably.
It was looking like a 9-0 whitewash as the third mixed pairing of Andy Jacobs and Lyn Harris won the first game 15-9 against Paul Carter and Elizabeth Nicholson. Again the 'C' team players showed great determination and won the second game 15-5 to force a decider.
The game was evenly poised at 13-13 and great credit goes to Elizabeth Nicholson for her composure on serve which meant the pairing won the match 15-13 and to snatch a vital point away from the 'B' team.
The final score was:
YMCA 'B' 8, YMCA 'C' 1
but the scoreline really didn't reflect just how close it was!
