Having seen the BATs Badminton Club B team lose their first match of the season the BATs A team were determined to do better in their first match in Division 3 of the Plymouth and District Badminton League against Devonshire C team
In the mens doubles rubbers the men took time to get used to playing with the feather shuttles. Alan Berry and David Harrington lost the first game 152 but then came back strongly to lose the second game and the rubber 1716. Alan Berry and Paul Bitton then lost the second rubber 154, 157. David Harrington and Paul Bitton then tried to repair the first two rubber losses but failed in the attempt 153, 1510. The men had lost their three rubbers.
In the ladies doubles rubber Susie Povey and Frances Ward soon had the better of the Devonshire pair and ran out winners 1510, 1514. Susie Povey and Elizabeth Rae then continued the winning run by taking the second rubber 157, 1510. The final rubber saw Frances Ward and Elizabeth Rae show their total superiority when they took the final ladies rubber 142, 156.
With the match all square the mixed doubles were going to decide who took the final honours. In the first mixed doubles Alan Berry and Frances Ward, playing for the first time together, just lost their rubber 1510, 1512. David Harrington and Susie Povey won the first game of their rubber 157 but the Devonshire pair came back strongly to take the second game 915 before David and Susie took the deciding game and the rubber 154. The third mixed doubles rubber was then the deciding rubber of the match and it went down to the wire with Paul Bitton and Elizabeth Rae just losing out in the third game 1714.
At the end of the evening the team had lost the match 54 to the Devonshire team, but with it being the first match in Division 3, they were pleased with the experience and points they had gained.
